Make 1K Wet

When Speedo got in touch in March to invite me to the launch of their 'Make 1K Wet' challenge I was gutted to be out of the country skiing. However, the fantastic team over at Speedo still let me join in and sent me a fab new costume and goggles to help me succeed.

The challenge - Make 1K Wet - is to swim 1K in the same time/faster than your 5k run time.

Growing up I swam for my county. I trained a lot and was entered into age category races much older than I was at the time. For a time I loved it and then I quit. I remember my coach coming to my house and begging my parents to persuade me to carry on and that I could be really great. I was asked what I thought. I told them I found swimming boring.  Session after session I had swum up and down, up and down. I was progressed into groups where there was no-one my age and I was miserable. Winning was great but the sessions were uninspiring. I was so lucky that at the time I also still did dancing and horse-riding and I loved those, so I stopped swimming.

I still loved swimming but I just stopped training. Swimming isn't as easy as going out for a walk or a run but I still enjoy a dip in the pool especially on holiday when it's just fun and relaxed.  So, after not really swimming for about 10 years I set about seeing if I could swim 1K. How far is that anyway? The pool at my gym is 25m so 4 x 25m = 100m, 10 times! 40 lengths! Despite being a member since August, I hadn't even been in the pool in my gym up until this challenge.

Once I'd worked that out the number of lengths and the fact that my fastest 5k time is 23:57 I was a little bit worried. 6 minutes to swim 10 lengths. It's hard and I haven't quite hit the 24 minute marker yet but I'm not far off. I'm giving myself a slight concession because my current 5k run time is probably a little but slower than 24 minutes at the moment and on that basis I've hit succeeded, but I'm still working away at chipping off some time.

But, do you want to know the best thing? This challenge has made me fall in love with swimming all over again and I've just signed up for a new challenge which involves swimming too! Can you guess what it is?

Finally, a very important message from Team Speedo.  Swimming can be so much fun but it can also be really dangerous. Speedo have put together a campaign called Swim Generation https://youtu.be/J16kj2uS9CQ this link takes you to their video which shows the horrifying statistic that 1,000 people die every day from drowning. Something that is preventable and can be stopped. Go take a look then grab your swimmers and get back in the pool!
