Tell Yourself You Can

Last night something incredible happened. As you may know I teach fitness classes and personal training in London and on Thursday nights I teach 5 back to back classes.

The workout yesterday was a full body circuit. There was one exercise which caused some trouble. Box jumps. I’d placed a big wooden box at one of the stations and duly demonstrated how to jump from two feet and land on two feet.

As is always the case with this exercise people find it hard to get over the initial fear and jump. Most either won’t try and all or hesitate a few times and then nail it. Kate was in my third class. I knew she could do it but she didn’t think she could and she couldn’t.

Each time she got to the station she told me that she couldn’t do it. She screamed in frustration. She did a few small jumps in anticipation to launch. She said she would never be able to do it. She quickly did a few step ups and she said she really wanted to do it.

At the end of the class she came to me and said she wanted to give it one last go. She tried a few more times and frustration was really setting in. Then she asked me a question, “why do you think I can do this”. I replied without pause, “Why do you think you can’t?”

“Change the narrative” I said, “telling yourself that you can’t do it isn’t working, try telling yourself you can. I can do this, I can do this, come on”.

“I can do this!” Kate said and she jumped.

The next bit happened so fast but there was Kate stood up on the box and we both screamed. The whole gym turned around as we high fived and beamed ear to ear.

As soon as Kate told herself she could do it she did. As soon as she gave herself permission to let go and believe in herself she did it.

Over the weekend and the coming week. Stop yourself when you hear yourself telling you that you can’t and start telling yourself that you can. Believe in yourself and you’re halfway there. If you want more support don’t be afraid to reach out and ask, you can find out more information about how I can help you here.

Have a wonderful sunny weekend and happy summer solstice.
